In the beginning – in terms of their sexual organs – all embryos look alike, says U. of I. veterinary biosciences professor Humphrey Yao, who led the study.

- Science News (Washington, D.C., Oct. 29) -- The search for what's causing widespread deformities in amphibians has resulted in several suspects, including agricultural chemicals and parasitic flatworms. Now a study led by U. of I. veterinary biosciences professor Val Beasley that combines field surveys and aquarium experiments bolsters the idea that the widely used herbicide atrazine conspires with the parasites to harm frogs.

- Medical News Today (Bexhill-on-Sea, England, Sept. 11) -- Researchers studying a critical stage of pregnancy – implantation of the embryo in the uterus – have found a protein that is vital to the growth of new blood vessels that sustain the embryo. The findings, from researchers at the U. of I., Emory University, Baylor College of Medicine and New York University, appear in the journal Development. "The formation of these new blood vessels is extremely critical for embryonic growth at this stage of pregnancy, when the embryo has begun to invade into the uterine tissue, but has yet to make a connection to the placenta where it ultimately gets its nutrients," says Illinois veterinary biosciences professor Indrani Bagchi, corresponding author on the study.
